UMSRS 2023 Short Course

PRRSUM is excited to host the following workshop associated with the 2023 Upper Midwest Stream Restoration Symposium. Regular conference registration is required for short course registration.

Short Course: Using laser scanning and Structure from Motion Photogrammetry to create 3D models in natural environments

Date/Time: Sunday, February 26rd, 2023 from 1 pm until 5 pm
Location: TBA
Instructor: Stephanie Day, Assistant Professor at North Dakota State University ((Chair and Associate Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Geospatial Sciences)
Cost: $110 per person

Workshop Description: In this short course we will explore both the hardware and software (including open-source options) for creating 3D models of outdoor spaces.  Participants will have an opportunity to work with both a tripod based and handheld laser scanner, and will process data from the scans generated using this equipment.  We will discuss current drone technology and some updates in the regulations, and process previously collected data to create a digital elevation model (DEM).  In addition, we will discuss how you can use any camera to gather data from a site and use it to examine change. This hand-on course is an introduction to these technologies and will provide the tools needed to start generating 3D models and DEMs.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this workshop students will be able to:

  1. Determine the best technology to build a three-dimensional model of their site of interest.
  2. Build a 3D model using structure from motion.
  3. Understand the process of developing a 3D model using terrestrial laser scanning.

Materials that students need to bring: Participants should bring a computer with access to download data and software.  Software and data downloads will be sent prior to the course.
